Objective
We were given 10 weeks to redesign Gulfstream Aerospace's flight deck pedestal. Gulfstream communicated up-front about their vision for the project, but we were in charge of delivering an amazing pedestal experience.
Sketching
We began sketching in order to brainstorm ideas for the overall form and appearance of the pedestal. At this stage any ideas were welcome and had potential.
Research
Pilot Interviews
In order to gain a better understanding of our problem and how to solve it we interviewed our target audience: Gulfstream's amazing pilots. They provided us with valuable insights about the design and functionality of the current pedestal and how it could be improved.
Pilot Survey
Our survey enabled us to gather numerical and qualitative data on the pilot's flight experience on a day-to-day basis.
Affinitization
After extracting data points from our survey and interviews we turned these insights into sticky notes and affinitized them in Miro. We then identified 4 key design areas to focus on: luxury, comfort, storage and controls.
Design Approaches
Utilizing the feedback from Gulfstream's pilots, we continued ideating through sketching. Wanting to provide Gulfstream with multiple design options, we proposed 2 different approaches to the pedestal design: visionary and iconic.
Final Design
Our final pedestal design is distinctly Gulfstream and reflects their luxury brand. It takes into consideration where the pilot sits and how they interact with the pedestal, as well as hand ergonomics when using controls. In addition, there is ample storage for personal belongings on the new and improved pedestal.
